I've been taking "clinic" group lessons at Oak Creek off and on for about 3 years now. The wife partakes a bit more than I do as my career in this "delicious economy" is in a transitionary stage whereas hers is not. The classes mostly take place on weekday mornings but I believe there is a Saturday option as well.

Duncan is a very smart guy and extremely knowledgeable well beyond the sport of golf. As a result, he teaches his classes in a well thought out manner. He clearly understands the difficulty of the game and doesn't want to overwhelm the beginner or even intermediate golfer. Therefore his teaching approach is largely in the vein of "baby steps" when it comes to beginners and a bit more in-depth "trouble-shooting" with the intermediate players.

There would be no point in giving a beginner 10 things to fix in regards to their golf swing when only 2-3 items were processed via their "gray matter" and the other 7 things went in one ear and out the other. Developing a golf swing and getting all of the MANY, MANY little things that are involved in the mechanics of it is not an easy process. So why would an instructor want to overwhelm the client and make them frustrated and possibly give up the sport early before giving it a real chance?

The day I began to really ENJOY golf was when I got my swing down. It took quite a while to get there given I was playing on average one round per week and taking an occasional "golf academy" clinic lesson. However, once I could hit the ball pretty consistently and would string together some pars along with a birdie (of course still not a regular occurrence) I truly began to enjoy the game. Its that "consistency" with the swing where the true enjoyment of the game begins. Before that there is a fair amount of "rolling the dice" and being unsure where your ball may go at times.

Duncan is super patient and will incorporate a little light humor, philosophical insight or useful analogies to help deliver his message. He is especially good about correcting issues (i.e. troubleshooting) which you discovered from your last round. For example, I would have a clinic lesson after a round of "Slice City U.S.A." on a course and then Duncan would tweak a couple of things and I'd be hitting the ball much better and typically much straighter during class.

I highly recommend anyone who is struggling with the game or just learning the game to take a few lessons with Duncan. And if you've been playing for a while but find yourself falling off track now and then, by all means, book your spot and head on over to the range.
